Aug. 6, 2017, Washington, D.C. – Seventh-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia took advantage of an exhausted Julia Goerges of Germany, defeating her 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-0, to claim the 2017 WTA Citi Open championship.
The Saturday order of play for the semifinals favored Makarova, allowing her to play her match against France’s Oceane Dodin at 4 p.m. On the other hand, Goerges did not start hers against a very difficult opponent, her compatriot Andrea Petkovic. until past 9 p.m. The latter match took two and a half hours to completed and ended around midnight.
With the victory, Makarova – a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist in singles – won her third career title on the WTA Tour.
