Hingis, Mirza cap banner 2015 with WTA Finals doubles title

“At the risk of sounding cocky, we are playing the best tennis out there, and that’s why we are winning that much. It’s pretty simple.”

That quote can be attributed to Sania Mirza, the No. 1 doubles player in the world.  Somehow, her declaration comes off as an understatement, considering her 10 titles in 2015, including two majors (Wimbledon and the U.S. Open) and the WTA Finals.  Joining her for nine of those victories?  None other than International Tennis Hall of Famer Martina Hingis, whose partnership with Mirza helped catapult the Indian to the top of the rankings.

In the WTA Finals championship match in Singapore, Hingis and Mirza faced the lowest-ranked seeds, the No. 8 team of Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro.  Although the Spaniards are both Top 10 singles players, they were stunned by combined quickness of Hingis and power of Mirza, quickly succumbing, 6-0, 6-3.  Hingis and Mirza combined to win 62 percent of the points, breaking serve five times (to the Spaniards’ one) and finishing the match in just one hour, six minutes.  The thorough drubbing prompted Suarez Navarro to quip to the champions with a grin after the match, “Now I know why you are No. 1.”

“I think I’m not scared of anything right now,” Hingis said.  “I don’t want to sound cocky” – there’s that word again – “but we’ve been thrown different things at us, and we were always able to find a winning formula and find a solution.”

Watch out, 2016.
