The “Carousel” was the theme for the latest S=YZ collection, and Spring 2016 suggests that it will be anything but a smooth ride. Rainbow-splattered blob prints and the ominous words “ride on” and “vie” (French for “life”) collided with a liberal dose of camp and kitsch, notably in the forms of fishnet stockings and transparent skirts. However, despite the frenzied styling – the crimped hair, the frayed denim, the head-to-toe matchy-matchiness of some of the outfits – the aesthetic managed to be more cohesive and less scatterbrained than S=YZ designer Song Yu-jin’s Fall 2015 offering. This rickety roundabout may not appeal to everyone, but it is refreshing to witness a little bit less polish on the Seoul runways every once in awhile.
