If Banana Republic markets this Spring 2016 collection as it was presented in New York, it will have a hit on its hands. Creative Director Marissa Webb understands the powerful visual impact of layering with different patterns and textures. For example, the striped pants in green, white and blue were paired with a button down shirt nestled underneath a short-sleeved decorated sweatshirt. Accented with patent burgundy pumps and blue fringe earrings, you’ve got a style blogger’s outfit worthy of a street shot. Other outfits were presented more simply – and strategically – with accessories. A pair of sunglasses, a bracelet and smoking slippers matched a lilac peplum dress, and some jewelry, a clutch, and cobalt fringe heels accompanied the double-breasted seersucker suit.
For men, the colors red, white, and navy dominated the nautical theme. They will also be prepared for warmer weather with nylon jackets and pants in navy (paired with button down shirts and simple dress shoes), or a floral suit with a navy peacoat. The best outfit was the double-breasted windowpane blazer and shorts in white and navy.
In addition to Webb’s Morocco-inspired collection, Banana Republic worked with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) on an initiative to celebrate American design. Two capsule collections will be created and manufactured entirely in New York and Los Angeles, respectively. For the Spring 2016 New York collection, CFDA and Banana Republic selected Alan Eckstein, Tim Weiland and Donna Kang, the design team behind the label Timo Weiland. The collaboration with Timo Weiland produced a few bright numbers, including an orange crop top and matching skirt; a tomato red drop waist dress; a few picnic-ready print dresses; and a feminine chambray tank, skirt, and blazer accented with bows.
