Zang Toi Spring 2016: Eveningwear trumps casual

Having never seen a Zang Toi show before, the fervor of the crowd was unexpected, with a VIP guest list including Miss Universe Paulina Vega, Patti LaBelle and many seasoned fashion professionals. Unfortunately, portions of Toi’s Spring 2016 runway show failed to build on this pre-show excitement.

Toi’s Greece-inspired Spring 2016 collection, “Splendor of Santorini,” comprised a color scheme of bleach white, green, black, and navy and turquoise blue. Casual white pantsuits – nine in total – and short matching skirts paired with basic tops served as a bland introduction, made only interesting by accompanying large hats. This merely served to whet the crowd’s appetite en route to the meat of his show – the eveningwear. Toi should just stick with designing for formal events because that is clearly where his talents lie. The quality of the materials, the incredible beadwork and the flow of the fabric drew gasps of delight from the crowd.  Two outfits in particular were notable: a woven silk column gown with a train bordered with blue hand-beaded sequins and crystals, and a glass beaded halter with a blue pleated tulle gown.  Hopefully the next season will include more breathtaking eveningwear or at least more innovative casual couture.
