Hong Kong Sevens 2015: Official (& unofficial) entertainment

The Hong Kong Sevens celebrated its 40th anniversary with some entertainment between the parade of rugby matches, both expected and unexpected.  The main attraction was the Village People, who performed a four-song set that, of course, included familiar tunes that have become anthems at sports events all over the world: “Can’t Stop the Music,” “Go West,” “Macho Man” and “Y.M.C.A.”

The Village People took the opportunity to correct fans on what has apparently been a pet peeve for years: when spelling out the ‘M’ in “Y.M.C.A.,” the hands should curve at the torso area – not above the head, “like monkeys,” as they told the crowd. (photo by Yuan-Kwan Chan / Meniscus Magazine)

On Sunday, spectators were treated to what was billed as Kung Fu Rugby which included high-flying acrobatics.

To maintain fans’ high-octane energy throughout the weekend, dancers hired by sponsor Cathay Pacific cheered up the crowd.

And finally, a wannabe streaker interrupted the Saturday matches, tumbling to the ground with a rugby ball.  Security led him off the pitch to a chorus of loud cheers.
