2014 Rogers Cup: Tsonga beats Dimitrov in semis

Rexall Centre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, August 9, 2014 – While their Rogers Cup semifinal match took almost an hour and a half to complete, the outcome was never in doubt.  The 13th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France constructed an efficient and effective match in beating the seventh seed and recent Wimbledon semifinalist, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, by systematically neutralizing the power and finesse with his deft touch.  The final score of 6-4, 6-3 would have been much worse if it was not for some timely serves by Dimitrov.  Even so, Tsonga won three of 10 break point chances while saving all four break points against him.  He won 59 percent of the points played while serving 17 times fewer than his opponent.

Tsonga’s advancement to the final, where he will face Roger Federer, follows victories over Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in the two previous rounds.
