Directly after the game between United and the Red Bulls, the Washington Freedom took the field at RFK Stadium. If the name of the team sounds familiar, that’s because they were part of the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) league founded a decade ago, capitalizing on the sudden popularity of women’s soccer in the U.S. following the country’s 1999 Women’s World Cup victory. Stars like Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain and Julie Foudy were part of the league. After a hiatus, women’s soccer is back with the new Women’s Pro Soccer (WPS) league.
The Freedom, led by 2004 Olympic gold medalist Abby Wambach, defeated the Saint Louis Athletica, 3-1, in front of more than 8,000 fans. Pictures from the game follow.
