Creative Director Tia Cibani moved from Scotland, the theme for last season’s Ports 1961 collection, to the equally-cold climate of Canada for her Spring 2009 runway show. With the late artist Emily Carr serving the inspiration and The Cowboy Junkies providing a soothing live soundtrack, Canada proved to be a much better fit this season.
Interestingly, “warm” was the first adjective that came to mind with clothes that featured golden, beige and copper tones and shades, capped off by wonderfully asymmetrical hats designed by Karen Henriksen. Knee-length dresses and skirts were the forte in a collection that, unfortunately, sputtered near the end: the structured looks earlier in the show gave way to figure-concealing dresses and coats reminiscent of last season’s offerings. Elongated loopy fringe also did little to enhance.
