Considering her roots as a bridal designer who gradually made a foray into ready-to-wear, the red carpet and costume gowns for Hollywood movies, Monique Lhuillier presented surprisingly hard edges in her Spring 2012 collection. Combining subtle femininity with 1980’s neon hues, Lhuillier made a bold attempt with black lace throughout form-fitting business wear and mini-dresses. Although the mood softened a bit in her closing series of evening gowns, the tones were much darker than what was expected for spring – and certainly when compared to her stellar Garden of Eden-inspired Spring 2011 collection. It was an admirable approach, but the prevailing preference is for the softly-tiered evening and wedding gowns that she is known for.
