The label Mulberry launched its newest collection with not one, but five shows at the Claridge’s Hotel. With guests sipping bottled Coca-Colas through straws and candied apple gifts dotting oversized chairs, two rooms filled with balloons and stationary carousel horses served as the background for the models, who walked out to circus-themed music.
For the Spring/Summer 2010 collection, Mulberry Creative Director Emma Hill wanted to juxtapose the dreamlike tragic beauty of Sofia Coppola’s film “The Virgin Suicides” with the equally haunting images of London photographer Tim Walker. Add that to Hill’s admitted fascination with all things Alice in Wonderland, and the atmosphere of the show took on an eerily creepy, almost sullen mood, despite all the surrounding pastels.
But unlike Kinder Aggugini, whose clothes were a mirror reflection of a very similar theme, Mulberry presented versatile separates. Fashionable and fun for women – and even a couple of dogs who walked the show in their own Mulberry gear – the new collection includes a number of pieces perfect for layering, mixing and matching. Short shorts, mini dresses and bomber jackets were the order of the day, and despite the seasons for which this collection was pegged, some of these items could be easily transferable into fall. Favorite looks included a sleeveless corsage dress in hippo grey silk cotton – a necklace accompanying a preceding dress used the same corsage detail to great effect – and a poacher jacket in black and nude washed nappa, with large pockets and cinched with a matching belt. To top it off, Mulberry added six lines of stylish bags, including the Alexa, named after British TV presenter Alexa Chung.
