The onscreen year was 1961, but the actual day of filming – featuring old cars, a building as a defunct cafe and the title character – was Feb. 17, 2012.
On this day in New York, outside of the now-shuttered vegetarian Japanese restaurant Kajitsu on East 9th Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenues), the East Village became Greenwich Village for Joel and Ethan Coen’s “Inside Llewyn Davis.” The title character, played by Oscar Isaac, is a struggling folk singer trying to make a name for himself in venues such as The Gaslight Poetry Cafe, pictured in a couple of these photos. (The real Gaslight Cafe existed in Greenwich Village between 1958 to 1971.)
“Inside Llewyn Davis” later won the Grand Prix at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Isaac was nominated for a Golden Globe in the “Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy” category. The film garnered two additional Golden Globe nominations as well as two from the Academy Awards.
