Nohant Spring 2017 (노앙) – Seoul Fashion Week 서울 패션 위크

It’s clear that nostalgia has hit Nohant creative director Noah Nam.  His note to show attendees at Seoul Fashion Week hinted at some regret over taking his university days for granted, when times were simpler among peers in a structured schedule lectures, studies and extracurricular activities, without the pressures of securing disposable income.  “I want you to really feel that even the moments of pulling all-nighters in empty lecture halls with tied-up hair, or wearing old and seemingly smelly and raggedy back-to-the-school [sic] clothes after returning from taking time off for military duty are truly your greatest moment of your lives,” Nam said on a statement mimicking a college admissions letter signed by a dean.

That longing for the past extended into Nam’s Spring 2017 collection, with the comfortable ease of exaggerated baggy silhouettes suitable for reclining in student lounges and studying among peers without judgment.  The mix-and-match style – an ode to a youthful, carefree trial-and-error approach – includes some familiar stylistic elements seen on campuses worldwide, not just in Korea: plaid button-down shirts, “Université de Nohant” block letter sweatshirts, V-neck sweaters and vests.  Although none of these pieces will reach the status of Nam’s widely recognizable “Hangeul Fashion” shirt collaboration with actor Yoo Ah-in, they nonetheless cohesively represent the closest connection to long gone days for those – like the designer – who wish to take a trip down memory lane.
