Verizon Center, Washington, D.C., June 26 – It was one of those improbable afternoons at the Verizon Center, where more than 6,000 fans saw their Washington Mystics (8-8) crush the reigning WNBA champions, the Minnesota Lynx (13-2), to a tune of 33 points to 13 in the first quarter alone.
With impressive crisp passes, and balanced inside and outside attacks, the Mystics made 55.6 percent (20 for 36) of their shots and 46.7% (seven of 15) three-pointers in the first half. By then, Emma Meesseman already had 18 points (8-for-9 shooting) and Tayler Hill had 15 (5-for-7), including 3-for-4 from the three-point range.
The Mystics managed to keep up the pace for the rest of the game, matching the visitors basket-for-basket in an impressive 87-63 victory. Never relinquishing their lead, Washington was ahead by as many as 26 points. Notable statistics included the Mystics’ advantages in points in the paint (30 to 24), second chance points (21-3) and fast break points (12-6).
The Lynx never gained any traction after their disastrous first quarter. Maya Moore scored a season-low five points (on 2-for-9 shooting). Renee Montgomery led the Lynx with 15 points, followed by Sylvia Fowles with 13.
