Romanchic Spring 2016 – Seoul Fashion Week

Romanchic’s chief designer Choi Hye Jung may have garnered quite a lot of attention after placing third in Project Runway Korea’s first season, but she’s not quite ready yet to make it to the big leagues of New York or Paris. Inspired by a comforting childhood memory wherein the young designer found solace whenever her mother bought her a bouquet of cotton candy, Choi’s spring collection leaned heavily towards free flowing dresses, skirts, and pantsuits. Each outfit featured lace, ribbon, or sheer fabric to remind us of the designer’s initial inspiration.

While the clothes were baggy in cut, Choi still succeeded in accentuating the models’ feminine form. It was quite clear that the designer worked very hard to offer up pieces that looked comfortable enough to wear and yet never sacrificed that function for something you could find at any retail store. The heavy use of white and black with a smattering of pastel colors and flower-print highlights contributed to the collection, evoking the contrasting poles of couture and confectionery.

However, the major gripe about the collection was the eventual monotony that set in as ensemble after ensemble appeared on the runway. Choi’s dogged determination to never veer too far away from her season’s aesthetic contributed to a Romanchic Spring 2016 collection primarily of fluff with only a few standout pieces in the collection.
