The Venezuelan CEO, creative director and founder of Karigam, Karina Gamez, is aiming to reach – according to the company’s mission statement – “young, professional, successful, affluent women.” However, not all of these women will necessarily embrace the label’s debut in New York. For Spring 2016, asymmetrical cuts, zippers, mesh and color blocking were key, yet repetitive, elements throughout, with a palette in white, grey, black and pink. A few of Gamez’s high-necked dresses and full length coats would certainly look attractive on tall, long-necked and long-legged women. However, a see-through turtleneck with oddly placed mesh inserts would not appeal to most.
Gamez’s basic cuts are wearable bordering on bland, if not for her interesting details. A white textured mesh dress is elegant due to its simplicity, whereas a basic button down shirt prompts a double-take with its colorblocked black and white panels. A one-shouldered midnight blue gown with a white asymmetrical skirt piece is reminiscent of a French maid’s uniform, but unusual enough to wear on a dinner date.
