ICB by Prabal Gurung Spring 2015: A tomboyish edge

Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2015 collection for ICB – his ninth overall for the brand – was a study of capturing motion through the fluidity of fabric, prints and fringe. Sporty and distinctly tomboyish pieces dominated the lineup, constructed in such tactile fabrics as mesh, chambray and crepe.

Fringe may seem like an odd bedfellow here, but it worked surprisingly well as a juxtaposition against the different fabrics, creating some of the strongest outfits in the collection. Embroidered onto the front of a pale blue abstract tweed jacquard dress with a white open grid mesh underlay, it gave the piece movement and an added edge. This feel was similarly replicated in a navy abstract tweed jacquard cropped jacket with fringe swinging down its front, interestingly worn over a long white cotton poplin shirt with a double-layered shirttail hem.

After a series of watermelon- and juniper-colored printed and fringed pieces – plus a small handful of chambray ones that looked out of place – Gurung’s black, white and grey windowpane checked outfits were a welcome palate cleanser. Simply rendered, the pattern most notably appeared in black and white on the pants portion of a wide-legged crepe jumpsuit closing the runway show.
