After experiencing a blowout 89-60 loss at the hands of Stanford the opening round of the 2014 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, UNLV head coach Dave Rice said that his young team was undergoing a steep learning curve.
“Every experience that this group goes through is new, but we don’t talk about youth,” Rice said after the game. “We just talk about getting better, learning lessons, moving forward.
“We have to get better mentally,” Rice added. “We have to pay attention to detail, do a better job of paying attention to scouting reports. We have to make sure we get to the shooters and make sure we do a good job of team rebounding.”
“It’s the third game of the season,” Rice pointed out.
The Runnin’ Rebels’ fourth took place the very next evening, when they bested Temple, 57-50, in the consolation game. Trailing after the first half, UNLV was aided by just 15.2 percent shooting by Temple in the second, but also significantly improved its rebounding, recording 41 for the game (up from just 24 against Stanford).
