July 16, 2014, Kastles Stadium at the George Washington University Smith Center, Washington, D.C. – Having just suffered their first loss of their 2014 World TeamTennis season at the hands of the San Diego Aviators, the Washington Kastles (7-1) got back to the winning column by beating the Texas Wild (5-4), 23-18.
Although it was a team effort, the evening clearly belonged to one Kastles player, Venus Williams. The capacity crowd in the Kastles Stadium treated her like a hometown hero. There were comments aplenty on every shot she made.
“Did you see that serve?”
“At least a 190…kilometer[s per hour serve].”
“Looks like she is back to her normal self.”
“See that running forehand?”
“Venus and Martina definitely make a great team.”
That last comment referred to Williams’ pairing with teammate Martina Hingis in women’s doubles – the first time the two had ever played together (they won, 5-2). However, Williams lost her singles set against Anabel Medina Garrigues (4-5), who reacted in total disbelief.
