August 11, 2013, Rexall Centre at York University, Toronto, Canada – For the entire week starting on August 3, the Rogers Cup women’s tournament in Toronto doubled as a celebratory stop of a year-long commemoration: the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). Some of the noted guests of honor included Billie Jean King, one of the founders of the WTA, and Rogers Cup tennis legends Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Jim Courier and Monica Seles. Seles teamed with rising Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard in a doubles exhibition match against Venus Williams and eventual 2013 champion Serena Williams to kick off the week.
Later, women’s sports pioneer King appeared in front of the press before her induction into the Rogers Cup Hall of Fame. Fellow honoree Sampras – joined by McEnroe, Courier, James Blake and other current ATP players – also played some exhibitions during the final weekend as part of the Rogers Legends Cup, now a companion event of the WTA’s Rogers Cup in both Toronto and Montreal.
