So this is what happens when the cool New York girl goes to visit her equally cool London friend. Timo Weiland’s Fall 2013 women’s runway collection showcased the designer’s preppy sensibility infused with that unmistakable British fashion quirk we have come to know through the style of girls such as Alexa Chung (who, come to think of it, should consider snapping up the cap-sleeved navy and white windowpane plaid dress shown with a black mink dickey collar). A slim-cut suit in the same overall windowpane plaid stole the show, emanating a certain je ne sais quoi coolness from its every stitch. Coming a close second was a blue and plum-striped cross-front dress, shown with an equestrian hat made by Albertus Swanepoel Studio.
Slim shirts buttoned up to the chin and tucked into equally slim pants or short skater skirts rounded out the series of looks. For any outfit that started to look too twee, shearling bomber jackets toughened things up. Finally. a khaki green jersey dress with tweed panels on the bodice, worn with a matching green velvet equestrian hat, was the perfect mix of flouncy sweetness and edge.
Timo Weiland’s men’s collection was shown in a presentation separate from the designer’s women’s runway show, which gave it the undivided attention it deserved. An equally cool counterpart to Weiland’s New York girl, the Weiland boy also enjoys wearing ankle-grazing straight leg trousers with his button-down shirts tucked in or worn under proper crewneck sweaters. The clothing conveyed an intellectual, confident air, reinforced by a muted black, forest green and navy color palette (broken up by an all-red ensemble worn by a mischievous-looking model). And of course, as in any good hipster’s wardrobe, there was an ironic sweater depicting an animal – in this case, a knit dachschund.
