Mathieu Mirano Fall 2012 – New York Fashion Week Review

Between Game of Thrones, Skyrim and the passing of “Dragonriders of Pern” author Anne McCaffrey, it’s not surprise that 2012 heralds the Year of the Dragon. Dragons were also the central theme for 20-year old designer Mathieu Mirano. Stately dragon’s heads hung from the ceiling over his Fall/Winter 2012 presentation, although the collection invoked piercingly cool high fantasy with its luxurious gowns and suits. Symmetry was the collection’s stylistic touchpoint, finding its way into the clothing through abstract Rorschach prints and embroidery such as regal four pointed gold star motifs. Folded jackets added texture and thickness to the tightly tailored outfits. Metallic details were used sparingly, with zippered edges accentuating outfits’ lines and suits sporting gold dragon heads adoring zipper pulls and clasps. Despite a small number of pedestrian fits, Mirano – a former Parsons School of Design student – proved that youth can stand toe to toe with experience.
