FILM
2009 Pusan International Film Festival
coverage by Christopher Bourne

Our senior reporter saw and conquered South Korea's behemoth film festival for the second straight year. Here is his coverage from the 14th annual edition...

Articles:

From a packed Pusan lineup, a Top 10 film list emerges: Putting together any kind of list of the best of the Festival's 355 films is probably the height of folly; still, I want to highlight some of the films that stood out for me this year.

My recap of The 14th Pusan International Film Festival: This year, PIFF unveiled its biggest slate ever: 355 films from 70 countries, sprawled out in two far-apart areas of Busan – and I had an even better time than last year.

Review:

"Good Morning President": Jang Jin’s film is a panoramic portrait of the political and personal lives of three successive fictional Korean presidents.

Videos:

Girls' Generation: The K-pop girl group performed two songs at the opening ceremony -- a cover of Faith Hill's "There You'll Be," and their own massive hit, "Genie."

"I Am Love" press conference: Tilda Swinton and director Luca Guadagnino talk about the film. Swinton, among other things, expressed her love for Korean cinema.

Opening ceremony: Scenes from the opening night ceremony before the screening of Jang Jin's "Good Morning President."

Bacon, blues and expanding bellies at the Food Network NYC Festival: One mere whiff of the air after stepping onto the third floor of The Standard New York made the theme of the evening’s festivities instantly obvious: bacon – and lots of it.

Food Network Festival guests satisfy sweet tooth: More than 50 restaurants, and food and beverage companies fed desserts to patrons during a late evening event of serious saccharine overload. Meniscus spoke with wedding cake chef Ron Ben-Israel and company Duncan Hines in an audio slide show.

"Antichrist": Lars von Trier's latest work is without a doubt his most extreme provocation to date.

"Kanikosen": The second film adaptation of Takiji Kobayashi’s novel finds director Sabu in a much more serious, earnest mode – while still retaining his unique brand of humor.

"Trash Humpers": Harmony Korine's “Trash Humpers” is the ultimate test for a viewer, its repetition and craziness practically daring one to not just walk out, but flee in disgust.

"Wild Grass": While remaining true to the spirit of “L’Incident,” a 1996 novel by Christian Gailly, “Wild Grass” is cinema through and through, rendered in Alain Resnais’ inimitable style.

Press Conference Videos:

Alain Resnais: The director of "Wild Grass" offers his thoughts on cinema vs. theater.

Harmony Korine: Korine, director of "Trash Humpers," discusses his film at a press conference following a screening at the 2009 New York Film Festival.

Lars von Trier: The "Antichrist" director discusses: how his depression affected his filmmaking; audience walkouts; casting Willem Dafoe; religious themes; and whether the "She" character was a good mother.

FASHION
London Fashion Week Spring 2010
coverage by Yuan-Kwan Chan

Reviews:

John Rocha: His strongest designs for women were those in cream and white, and some stiff bird’s nest tank tops and dresses. The men’s collection was less compelling. | Video

Kinder Aggugini: The Italian designer presented a hauntingly beautiful and macabre collection that seemingly exposed its fabrics’ ugly innards. | Video

Mulberry: The atmosphere of the show took on an eerily creepy, almost sullen mood, despite all the surrounding pastels. But Mulberry presented versatile separates, fashionable and fun for women – and even a couple of dogs. | Video

Temperley London: For the most part, the circus-themed collection was vintage Temperley without being over the top. | Video

Article:

London Fashion Week: There’s a scene, but it’s actually about the clothes: London stands as a marked contrast to the other slick fashion capitals – and it’s because of that feistiness that London cannot, and should not, be a distant fourth on the fashion calendar. Here are some reasons why.
