HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2009 Bubbling Up From the Dead! Can flat soda be revived?! Every day, hard working people suffer from the effects of flat soft drinks. Perhaps you took a Diet Coke into a meeting and drank only half of it because the carbonation had fizzled out. Or maybe you bought a two-liter Dr. Pepper and had to toss it out before it was fully consumed. Flat soda/pop/cola affects us all, and there was seemingly no way to stop the inevitable end of effervescence within our junk drinks. Luckily, science has come to the rescue. Soda making machines, such as Soda-Club’s Sodastream, are easy-to-use carbonating machines used to create your own do-it-yourself soft drinks. But can it bring flat soda back from the dead? We at Meniscus documented this experiment, and the results follow in this video:
The experiment was a success! But how did it work? Well, honestly, it’s not exactly rocket science. The Sodastream does nothing more than jet carbonation into the water with each button press. The only hang up about resurrecting your flat sodas is that dipping the gas spout into sugary, syrupy liquid will eventually clog it. That and dilute the flavor, which is never enjoyable unless you were one of those kids who mixed five sodas together at your convenience store and/or local buffet. A warning in the Sodastream packaging supports this (something I gleefully ignored for the sake of this article). Soda-club sells a variety of flavor syrups, from the good (sparkling grapefruit) to the pale substitute (root beer). The company also offers diet cola syrup, but why bother when a few sprits of carbonation brings your dearly departed soft drinks back to life?
